Keeping you in the picture

February 2010

The Chief Inspectors of H.M Inspectorate of Prisons and H.M Inspectorate of Constabulary published inspection reports of police custody in Wiltshire, Cumbria and Warwickshire.

Police custody in both areas was a generally positive picture, though there were some concerns.

Overall, the inspection found a generally positive picture, with detention well managed and some areas of excellent practice.

The reports can be downloaded in full here:

A Tribute

It is with regret that we bring the sad news of the death of two people who played an integral role in independent custody visiting.

One of the earliest instigators of custody visiting has passed away. Greta Brooks died on the 26th December 2009 at the age of 92, after spending two happy days of Christmas celebrations with her family, including all her grandchildren.

Greta was a founder member of the Lay Visiting Scheme (later to be called Independent Custody Visiting) following the Scarman Report on the Brixton disorders in 1981.

We were also sad to learn that a long serving custody visitor, Trevor Evans, from South Wales has recently passed away.

The staff and executive committee of ICVA pass on their condolences to the families and friends of Greta and Trevor at this time.
